When creating branded content on Instagram, it's important to comply with policies that ensure the content is viewed by the appropriate audience. Instagram allows creators and brands to set age and location restrictions on posts, stories, videos, and reels, particularly for restricted goods like alcohol, dating, and financial products. Here's how you can set these restrictions:
Restricted Goods Requiring Minimum Age
Some products require age restrictions to comply with Meta's policies. These include:
- Alcohol
- Dating services/apps
- Regional lotteries
- Online pharmacies
- Prescription drugs
- Cosmetic procedures and weight-loss products
- Financial and insurance products
Setting Minimum Age and Location Restrictions
You can apply age and location restrictions when creating branded content. If you have access to the Paid Partnership label, these restrictions can be applied to your posts across Instagram’s Feed, Stories, Videos, and Reels.
1. Setting a Default Minimum Age
You can set a default minimum age for people everywhere who view your content. For example, setting the minimum age to 21 means that only users who are 21 or older will be able to see your post.
- Example: Set the default minimum age to 21 to block viewers under 21 from seeing the post.
2. Setting Minimum Age for Specific Countries
If you want to set different age restrictions for different countries, you can do so for each country individually. For example:
- Set the minimum age to 18 for people in Turkey.
- Set the default minimum age to 25 for everyone else.
This allows for more localized control over who sees your branded content based on regional age regulations.
3. Setting Location Restrictions
In addition to age restrictions, you can block entire countries from seeing your content. For instance, you can add France to your Location Restrictions, which would block anyone in France from seeing the post, regardless of their age.
- Example: Set a minimum age of 18 for people in Turkey, but block all users in France from seeing the post. You can set these restrictions in the Location Restrictions under your Instagram settings.
How to Set Age and Location Restrictions
To set these restrictions, follow these steps:
For Feed Posts, Stories, Videos, and Reels:
-
Advanced Settings for Feed, Video, and Reels:
- When creating the post, go to Advanced Settings.
- Set the Minimum Age for people everywhere or for specific countries.
- Add Location Restrictions if necessary.
-
For Stories:
- When creating a story, tap the link icon at the top of the screen.
- Access Audience Restrictions to set minimum age and location.
Important Notes:
- Changes After Posting: You cannot add or change the minimum age once a post is live. If you want to adjust the age restrictions, you’ll need to delete the post and create a new one with the correct settings.
- Default Settings: You can set a default minimum age for all your posts in your Instagram creator or business settings. This will apply to any new post unless specific country restrictions are set.
By following these steps, you can ensure your branded content is visible only to the appropriate audience, and in compliance with Meta’s policies.
